This superb nine bedroom (19 person) former church is located in the historic market town of Strathaven, South Lanarkshire. Strathaven is the largest settlement in Avondale. The town was granted a Royal Charter in 1450, making the Town of Strathaven a burgh of barony. The town is located on the edge of the strath of the Avon Water and is around 18 miles (29 km) from Glasgow. The A71, which connects Edinburgh passes through the town.
Strathaven is home to Scotland’s only annual Hot Air Balloon Festival, with everything from the castle and its 'white lady' ghost to the park and its famous Wee Train. There's lots of do in the historic market town of Strathaven - pronounced Stray-ven. Strathaven is particularly picturesque and at its core is a conservation area, making it feel more like a country village than a bustling town.
Strathaven Castle lies to the South of the town on the A71 and the castle ruin is publicly accessible. Also known as Avondale Castle, the ruin and mound is now a Scheduled Ancient Monument. There has been a castle on the site from the 13th century and the Castle ruins, according to local legend, is home to the ghost of the White Lady.
The town's focal point is the attractive area, known as Common Green, where markets were once held. Strathaven has a fascinating mix of shops, and coffee houses and a variety of fine restaurants, and pubs as well as the Strathaven Hotel, an imposing country house hotel, designed by Robert Adam Jr in the 18th century.
The church enjoys a beautiful, yet peaceful location within the town. Situated next to Allison Green, the church has direct access to the park, which is well kept, has lovely flower beds and the Powmillon burn which flows through the town on its way to the River Avon. On the other side of the church lies the John Hastie and George Allan Parks. The Parks are well worth a visit, and through the summer you can enjoy boating on the pond, a railway journey on the miniature railway, lots of fun on the putting green, and plenty of space to relax and appreciate the open space. During the summer the Park is used for the Strathaven Gala celebrations, including the famous Duck Race down the Powmillon burn and in August is the venue for the annual Hot Air Balloon Festival.
